Hello everyone,
and welcome to day 6 of our Advent Calendar.
The 6th of December is a special day because it is Nikolaus-Tag.
In Germany, and I think also many other countries that do Christmas, kids shine their shoes and then put them outside on the evening of the 5th and then during the night, the Nikolaus comes by and drops off some little treats. Like chocolate, cookies, oranges, raisins and more.
Also in many offices, people might bring some sweets or homemade Plätzchen (German word for christmas cookies) on the 6th.
And you will get a little treat today as well … drumroll….
The YDG Grammar Analyzer Extension
A while back, I put up a little grammar analyzer based on ChatGPT where you can put in a sentence or phrase and it’ll give you an analysis of the basic grammar as well as a word by word translation.
And this is now available as a chrome extension (and Brave browser extension). So you can add it to your browser and use it while you surf the interwebs :).
Here’s how it looks:
Basically, you open the extension, and then, when you mark something on a website, it’ll get imported automatically into the “selection” and all you have to do is click “analyze”.
To open the extension, it’s easiest if you pin it to the extension bar and then click the button there.
Now, it’s still a pretty basic tool and the analysis it gives you will not always be 100% correct. Especially complicated grammar might give it a hard time. It’s ChatGPT after all, so anything has to be taken with a grain of salt.
But I think overall it can give you at least a rough orientation or just help you translate words and phrases.
Important: I have set a limit to how long the section can be that you analyze. If it is too short, please let me know, but I can’t leave it unlimited because sooner or later someone will mark an entire wikipedia entry otherwise.
It’s also pretty basic at the moment, so it’s not exactly pretty, but I will gradually improve it over time. Like… the next thing I want to add is the option to edit a section before analyzing. So you can take out irrelevant stuff for instance.
Anyway, if you want to try it out, you can install it right from the Chrome web store…

Installed it and put a couple of Nena lyrics. It works great. Where other ‘translators’ are a bit word for word, your Idiomatic translation nailed it (for what I know). Not only that, your “AI Thoughts” were almost…human – telling me “It’s a positive and motivating sentence for German learners” Indeed!

The plug-ins’s word for word was the same as another translator’s final answer: “Put yourself before everything goes” which has a VERY different Gefühl from the real translation. Its another Hampterkaufen run on toilet paper.

Could you please link your analyzer in the AI Tools menu above? I remembered you had it, then couldn’t find it in the tools, so I thought it was some other site, and did not go looking for it.

Sadly, this does not work with MS Edge/Bing; you can add the extension but it will not allow you to use it. As an alternative, I asked Bing Chat GPT to “analyze this German sentence for me”, and it gave me the following:
Certainly! Let’s analyze the grammar of the German sentence: “Die Szene wird von dem Charakter geändert hat.”
Overall, the sentence translates to: “The scene has been changed by the character.”
Please note that the word order in German sentences can be flexible due to the cases, but the structure described above follows the standard pattern. If you have any more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask!

So, there is an alternative (I think…) for those of us who use Edge/Bing.
Meh, it’s okay-ish, but it didn’t mention that the sentence is in passive and calling “von dem Character” just the object is a bit misleading.
In my extension, I ask for a word for word analysis, which is a little more detailed but it’ll also possibly miss out on recognizing a passive voice.
I am unable to locate the extension on Chrome. It gives me a long list of extensions.
Do you mean you can’t find it in the store, or you can’t find it once you’ve installed it? Also, you need to access it from Desktop, not mobile.
I was on my desktop. In Edge ( not chrome), i download the extension and could see the button to use it but was not allowed to actually press on the button… It was…. Inactive?? (Paled out in color and not functional). Not sure that will help… I agree, CHAT GPT isn’t perfect.
It won’t work on Edge, it only works on Chrome :)

The technology is there, but it’s not exactly cheap yet, so then the extension would NOT be free anymore :)

I use Opera as my browser and it loads this extension, but I cannot see how to use it. Opera provides Aria as an AI and translates a German sentence if I ask it, but I cannot see how to get your extension to perform its magic. Danke.
That’s interesting. As far as I am aware, Opera does NOT have a sidepanel like Chrome does and the extension only works as a sidepanel, not a popup. Do you see a sidepanel in opera?
Amazing! Is a firefox version coming up?
The thing with Firefox, as far as I am aware, is that they do not have this sidepanel that chrome has. Only chrome and brave have that. So Firefox would need a popup for this and I don’t think it’s practical because the analysis is pretty long.
As soon as Firefox adds a sidepanel, I’ll make a Firefox version.
My Plätzchen Story: When I was an exchange student in high school in Germany, many many years ago, I was in biology class, and was have trouble pronouncing “Blutplättchen” (blood platelets). So it always came out as Blutplätzchen- blood cookies LOL. When I returned home to the State my family gave me a bag of little red cookies! I still can’t pronounce them correctly
Sehr hilfreich! I ran it on a sentence from the WienTourismus website and it gave me a good analysis. One small correction: the header in the extension dialog box says “Garmmar Analyzer.” ;) Laughed out loud at the HAL reference in the blog post. :D Vielen Dank und einen frohen Nikolaus-Tag!

I’ll fix it with the next update, but Google always takes like a day to approve a new version, so it’ll be up for a while.
