“Fit and Miss”
Hello everyone,
and welcome to day two of the German Learning Advent Calendar. And instead of easing into it, we’ll jump right into the action and get busy with a quiz. One of my favorite quiz types, actually:
Find the Misfit
Here’s how it works:
I give you a few words and one of them doesn’t fit with the others. In older quizzes, I was pretty much exclusively aiming at some grammar aspects, like plural or how the ge-form looks or whether it is a subordinating conjunction or a coordinating conjunction.
Yeah… I know… sounds riveting!
But this time, it’s not as nerdy and I also put some in where you need to translate to see the difference, so you can practice your vocabulary also…ever so slightly :).
I’ll give a quick explanation for each solution, too, but it is definitely possible that there are other solutions and reasons that I didn’t notice.. It’s really hard creating one set of words that really only differs in ONE aspect.
Anyway, I really enjoyed making this, so viel Erfolg und viel Spaß!
Let me know in the comments how you did and if it was a nice level of difficulty.
Have an amazing day and I’ll see you tomorrow.
3/7 – ich habe jetzt kein Selbstbewusstsein
Ah, nein, keine Sorge :). Das Quizz war für die meisten Leute echt schwer.
I translated the mountain range as die Bergkette, and and chose it because it was the only word that isn’t neutral (das). And of course the G vs E no longer worked. No worries. I still learned heaps. Thanks. .BTW, I’m 10 days late starting this. Better late than never! :-)
“Bergkette” makes perfect sense, as well.
I feel like English doesn’t have a good unique word for “Gebirge” (collection of single mountains). Sometimes, it’s called mountain range and sometimes just “the mountains”.
Wow war das schwer aber super Kreativ und hilfreich. Wenn man vom Englischen ins Deutsche übersetzen muss, benutzt man einen anderen Teil des Gehirns, als wenn man nur das deutsche Wort liest. Was für eine Herausforderung :)
Wow, dein Kommentar war 10/10. Bist du Muttersprachler?
1/7
I knew I was bad but that was just harrowing.
Did you use a dictionary? Without it, it’s quite hard, unless you have a really broad vocabulary.
6/7. Great quiz. Thank you!
Newbie question here: are these supposed to be open book?
What does that mean?
Es tut mir leid: Erlauben wir während des Quiz Wörterbuch anschauen? (Wir sagen das auf Englisch “open book”.)
Oh, yes, absolutely :)!!
Without it, it would be just a vocabulary quiz, but that’s not what it’s about.
Danke sehr!
Super-cool!
Oh, super, das freut mich! Willkommen und viel Spaß!
Now that I see the comments, I feel a lot better about getting 4/7. Although I also feel like a bit of a freak for finding that dative/genitive one the easiest. (It’s not my fault. I’ve done years of Latin, so case inflection is one of the easy things about German for me.)
Oh yeah, knowing Latin is definitely a game changer when it comes to learning German cases. A good friend of mine knows Latin and Ancient Greek (to an extend) and he had no problem with German grammar. Vocabulary was a different issue though :)
order — vorschreiben – Vorschift
verfügen
der Verein
die Verordnung
Der verlorene Sohn ist zurückgekehrt!!
Awesome quiz! Thank you for this!
Lol, I completely forgot every German word in my brain, but this was definitely a fun learning opportunity!
Haha this is me too. I completely forgot the “it’s about German” on the first question, but still got it right because there’s also an English reason it’s the misfit XD
Oh, true!! (not going to spoil it :)
ich bin der Größte!
7/7 oder was :D?
I only got the dative/genitive question right; the rest were trick questions for me.
Wow, you got the most difficult one correct then :)!
At least I think it’s one that most people got wrong.
Ich liebe es! Meine erste Punktzahl war nur 57%, aber ich habe es weiter versucht und viel gelernt! Das ist toll! Ich freue mich auf Morgen!
Das war sehr interessant. Vielen Dank für deine Mühe. Bis morgen. Thanks a lot. I enjoyed it. It helped me to think hard. Thanks for your hard work. Till tomorrow
Wow, you got me on this one! I thought I was pretty good, but you put me in my place. I am really looking forward to some more like this, now that I know how your brain seems to be working. I will do a much deeper analyses the next time, before selecting my answer.

Loved it!
ich bin anfänger aber viel Spaß
Großer Spaß. Es hat mir viel gefallen. Ich freue mich auf dem nächsten.
Super!
Kleine Korrektur:
What a great quiz. I got 1/7 correct. I learned a ton, and it really got me thinking! Thanks
Oh, cool to hear that you didn’t get disillusioned :).
Ha! 2/7, mostly by luck. I don’t know German (except a few words from high school, long ago). I love your web site and your approach. I want to learn!
That’s great! Viel Erfolg :)
