and welcome to a new episode of one of the most prolific series of this year:
I have a New Feature
And it’s a real game changer for all who ask me something in the comments and then wait for a reply.
I also have prepared a little poll about a couple of things, but before we jump in, I need to tell you something.
I am an influencer now!!
Yes, your boy has made it. Ah, what am I saying… that doesn’t sound “influencer” enough.
I mean of course WE made it, guuuuuyyyys. Because it wouldn’t have been possible without all your support.
Together, me made it all the way to the top, and have a sponsor for this post.
Today’s sponsor is Raid Shadow Legends.
Nah, kidding of course.
The real sponsor is the company FlexiSpot and if you work from home and need a proper desk or chair, then they have just what you need. I got my hight-adjustable desk from them a while ago and my back and I are super happy with it.
And for the sponsorship, they let me select another product and I chose the height adjustable desk top M8, or as it is called in German
Höhenverstellbarer Schreibtischaufsatz M8/M8MB. What a name :)
I use it as a desk when I have a day of Work from Bed, but it’s perfect if you DON’T have a height adjustable desk and you want to work standing. They also have chairs there and some other nice things, AND they’ll run a big black Friday sale this November, so if you need anything this might be a good opportunity.
Oh, they also exist in other countries like FlexiSpot.nl and other countries, if shipping is too expensive.
So yeah… thanks for sponsoring this post.
And now it’s time to get to the new feature :)
Comment Reply Notifications
So far, there was only an option to “subscribe” to a comment by email, and get an email notification if someone replies to your comment. But because of legal reasons, you had to confirm every single subscription and also, we all get enough emails already.
All that changes now, because I now have on-site notifications :).
So you have a little notification box that shows you if you have new replies and that lets you navigate right to them.
Here’s how it looks:
Depending on your browser settings, you can also get a browser notification, and a push notification on your phone.
So yeah… no more emails and no more going to the site just to check if I have replied to your question yet :).
Now, this feature is connected to an account, so you have to be logged in for it to work. But for now it doesn’t matter if you have an active membership, so even if yours expired and you’re taking a break – the notifications should still work.
Now, I actually have a second new feature, also related to comments, so let’s mention that as well real quick.
You might have noticed it already – at the top of the comment threads, there’s now a search function, which searches ONLY the comments on the particular post.
That way, if you have a specific keyword you have a question about, you can quickly check if someone has maybe asked that before.
Not exactly life changing, but at least for articles that have like hundreds of comments, this might be helpful sometimes.
So that’s the new features, but before we wrap it up for today, I’d like to ask you a couple of questions real quick.
A couple of Questions
The first one relates to the tech issues that we’ve recently had with the blog.
I’m talking to my host, but they’re not exactly super into solving it and changings hosts is an absolute nightmare.
These issues usually occur after updates and sort themselves out within a few days, and only a portion of you actually sees them.
But I have no clue how many, so I want to get a little impression.
And then the second question is about what will be going on here in December :)
And that’s it for today. Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer the questions and let me know in the comments if you like the new feature and if you think it’s useful.
Have a great day and I’ll see you in a few days :).
And as for problems that I have seen, for a while the little icons (microphone, speech bubble, and folding page) were just funny little place-holder boxes, though they functioned ok. And about a month ago I couldn’t get your voice to play when you read a sentence aloud. All seems to work now (though that said, I had to log out and then log in again to send this comment — it would not send the first time.) I am on a laptop, not a phone.
Yeah, that’s because of server and browser caching. The server sometimes for some reason does not serve relevant scripts and then the comments and some other “interactive” functions don’t work. It’s really annoying.
My sympathies about the server issues. Such a pain. We all have to hang in there together when it comes to humans vs servers. We are smarter than them. We are. We are. We must keep our confidence up!
Hahaha, exactly!! Who are they? Servers. Like internet waiters! But acting like they’re internet CEOs.
Hallo lieber Emanuel,
Ich hoffe dir ein schönes Guberstag .
Macht’s gut .
Oh, du hast es dir gemerkt! Merci beaucoup!!! Ich hatte gestern und ich habe schön gefeiert am Wochenende.
hi Emanuel. Is there a way I can bookmark articles within my profile please? So i can keep a list of articles I’d like to return to for instance.
Edit. : Sorry, I figured out I can create a bookmark by leaving myself a note . I was looking at “My Profile” and couldn’t see the notes (so thought notes would only be visible from the article page) but realised that is in a separate drop down menu for “Your Notes” under “Members”. Problem solved!
I’ll look if there’s a bookmark software around that is not too glitchy. It’d be a nice little addition.
Your hack with the notes is pretty good.
But don’t write comments on “Your Profile”. I actually thought I had those disabled because they will be visible to everyone in their profile. You could put them in the “About me” section though, for quick reference :).
Actually I think for me this hack will function as well as a bookmark, but if its something you want to add anyway go for it! : )
No need for typos today, but I answered the questions and YES, I do want an advent calendar :)
Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay, but I have to say it’s saddening to see all those dead trees.
I agree about the Harz, it’s quite beautiful and well worth seeing. My wife and I visited the region some years ago having driven there from our daughter’s home in Sulingen, near Bremen. As we boarded the old steam-train which runs to the summit of the Brocken on a warm, sunny Summer’s day we were very lightly dressed to suit the conditions but couldn’t help notice how warmly dressed our fellow-passengers were. We found out why! It was seriously cold up there and it was one of the 300 days on which it rains. Our plans to go walking had to be abandoned. A quick dash to the restaurant, an equally swift dash back to the train and that was that. Well done with your sponsorship Emanuel. The site is going from strength to strength! Thank you!
Was the forest already in decay when you were there?
The “Brocken” especially is a wasteland right now, as it was pretty much Spruce only.
The area around Thale has more leaf trees and it looks much better.
I didn’t know it was so rainy up there by the way, but I knew it was windy.
That’s a good point Emanuel. So, it’s attraction is much diminished it seems, from a scenic perspective anyway. Fortunately we were there well before the damage was done.
Check, check, and check! Thank you for the enhancements to the site. I do 20-30 minutes of German a day and you/YDG are a key piece in my studies. It matters to have someone answer back when the rest of the internet can’t. Every puce of the puzzle helps. Vielen Dank!
Gerne, and thanks for the nudge toward comment overviews. I had it on my list for a while and started coding something but then I started searching and I found this paid software, which is much better than what I could have made :). I’m really happy with this.
These are great features!
Re: the poll, hopefully you get plenty of responses that give you a good picture of how many issues there have been, but just in the interest of full disclosure, I pretty rarely listen to the audio, so I don’t actually know whether things would have played on days when I had other issues (layout, comments).
My hunch is that it’s either ALL the issues or none, because it comes down to scripts not being served properly, but of course not everyone notices every issue. I hope it’s not a shockingly high number :/
I think everything was OK on my phone (Android). The problems were mostly on desktop. Comments, and I think layout too for a sec. Every so often the comments would work, but not for too long. I didn’t try to play audio. Everything seems OK now (but I rarely use the AI, so can’t speak for that).
Definitely digging the new features.
Weird thing that it was off and on like that :/. October was quite annoying with that, but I hope November will be back to normal.
Oh yeah, I pretty much only check the site on desktop, so can’t speak to how things went on my (iOS) phone.
Hello! I am also new here! I noticed that some generous members in this blog donated to support others. Today, I asked Emanuel to sponsor my membership. So 5 minutes ago he gave me a 1 year membership. I am really appreciated and I want to express my gratitude to you. I am very happy and I hope to be a sponsor one day in the near future. :)
Hi everyone! I am new here! A few days ago, I kindly asked Emanuel to sponsor my membership because I couldn’t afford to pay for it(due to the difficulties in my country). He told me that some members in this blog donated to support others and now he gave me a 1 year membership.I don’t know how to thank you.. I hope one day, I can support others in this way. I feel so lucky to be a part of a team like this, and I thank you all very much.. :)
Ugh: this post is a little overrun with errors: I hope Elsa will forgive my treading on her toes, but the urgency here is rather pressing! I’ll confine myself to the most glaring…
“and if in home office and need a proper desk or chair,” => “and if you work from home and need a proper desk or chair,”
“then they just what you need.” => “then they have just what you need.”
“I got my high-adjustable desk” => “I got my height-adjustable desk”
“But because of legal reason,” => “But because of legal reasons,”
“I now have on site notifications :).” => “I now have on-site notifications :).”
“so lets mention that as well real quick.” => “so let’s mention that as well real quick.”
“(you can select multiple options)” => Errrm, no you can’t, you get a dialog box when you try to do that, filled with “yourdailygerman.com says ‘Maximum number of choices allowed: 1′”
Thanks a lot for these!! I actually posted before proofreading, this really helped :).
And the multiple answer feature works now.
I did select “allow multiples” but forgot that I also have to manually set the max number which defaults to 1.
A couple of little things: height adjustable
…and m6 back and I …
my back and I
I sent accidentally instead of reopening to read it.
Ha, yeah, I read MI6 when I first skimmed the comment :). Danke dir!!
