Comment Reply Notifications
So far, there was only an option to “subscribe” to a comment by email, and get an email notification if someone replies to your comment. But because of legal reasons, you had to confirm every single subscription and also, we all get enough emails already.
All that changes now, because I now have on-site notifications :).
So you have a little notification box that shows you if you have new replies and that lets you navigate right to them.
Here’s how it looks:
Depending on your browser settings, you can also get a browser notification, and a push notification on your phone.
So yeah… no more emails and no more going to the site just to check if I have replied to your question yet :).
Now, this feature is connected to an account, so you have to be logged in for it to work. But for now it doesn’t matter if you have an active membership, so even if yours expired and you’re taking a break – the notifications should still work.
Cool.
Now, I actually have a second new feature, also related to comments, so let’s mention that as well real quick.
Comment Search
You might have noticed it already – at the top of the comment threads, there’s now a search function, which searches ONLY the comments on the particular post.
That way, if you have a specific keyword you have a question about, you can quickly check if someone has maybe asked that before.
Not exactly life changing, but at least for articles that have like hundreds of comments, this might be helpful sometimes.
Cool.
So that’s the new features, but before we wrap it up for today, I’d like to ask you a couple of questions real quick.
A couple of Questions
The first one relates to the tech issues that we’ve recently had with the blog.
For those of you who are in the know… it’s basically because the browser doesn’t properly load the jquery module and a few other Javascript files (or the server doesn’t serve them), and it’s ultimately about caching. If these files are not loaded, some functions of the site will not work, but it’s really hard to influence this loading behavior because every browser works differently, especially on mobile.
I’m talking to my host, but they’re not exactly super into solving it and changings hosts is an absolute nightmare.
These issues usually occur after updates and sort themselves out within a few days, and only a portion of you actually sees them.
But I have no clue how many, so I want to get a little impression.

And as for problems that I have seen, for a while the little icons (microphone, speech bubble, and folding page) were just funny little place-holder boxes, though they functioned ok. And about a month ago I couldn’t get your voice to play when you read a sentence aloud. All seems to work now (though that said, I had to log out and then log in again to send this comment — it would not send the first time.) I am on a laptop, not a phone.

Yeah, that’s because of server and browser caching. The server sometimes for some reason does not serve relevant scripts and then the comments and some other “interactive” functions don’t work. It’s really annoying.
My sympathies about the server issues. Such a pain. We all have to hang in there together when it comes to humans vs servers. We are smarter than them. We are. We are. We must keep our confidence up!

hi Emanuel. Is there a way I can bookmark articles within my profile please? So i can keep a list of articles I’d like to return to for instance.
Edit. : Sorry, I figured out I can create a bookmark by leaving myself a note . I was looking at “My Profile” and couldn’t see the notes (so thought notes would only be visible from the article page) but realised that is in a separate drop down menu for “Your Notes” under “Members”. Problem solved!
I’ll look if there’s a bookmark software around that is not too glitchy. It’d be a nice little addition.
Your hack with the notes is pretty good.
But don’t write comments on “Your Profile”. I actually thought I had those disabled because they will be visible to everyone in their profile. You could put them in the “About me” section though, for quick reference :).
Actually I think for me this hack will function as well as a bookmark, but if its something you want to add anyway go for it! : )

I agree about the Harz, it’s quite beautiful and well worth seeing. My wife and I visited the region some years ago having driven there from our daughter’s home in Sulingen, near Bremen. As we boarded the old steam-train which runs to the summit of the Brocken on a warm, sunny Summer’s day we were very lightly dressed to suit the conditions but couldn’t help notice how warmly dressed our fellow-passengers were. We found out why! It was seriously cold up there and it was one of the 300 days on which it rains. Our plans to go walking had to be abandoned. A quick dash to the restaurant, an equally swift dash back to the train and that was that. Well done with your sponsorship Emanuel. The site is going from strength to strength! Thank you!
Was the forest already in decay when you were there?
The “Brocken” especially is a wasteland right now, as it was pretty much Spruce only.
The area around Thale has more leaf trees and it looks much better.
I didn’t know it was so rainy up there by the way, but I knew it was windy.
That’s a good point Emanuel. So, it’s attraction is much diminished it seems, from a scenic perspective anyway. Fortunately we were there well before the damage was done.

Gerne, and thanks for the nudge toward comment overviews. I had it on my list for a while and started coding something but then I started searching and I found this paid software, which is much better than what I could have made :). I’m really happy with this.

Re: the poll, hopefully you get plenty of responses that give you a good picture of how many issues there have been, but just in the interest of full disclosure, I pretty rarely listen to the audio, so I don’t actually know whether things would have played on days when I had other issues (layout, comments).
My hunch is that it’s either ALL the issues or none, because it comes down to scripts not being served properly, but of course not everyone notices every issue. I hope it’s not a shockingly high number :/
I think everything was OK on my phone (Android). The problems were mostly on desktop. Comments, and I think layout too for a sec. Every so often the comments would work, but not for too long. I didn’t try to play audio. Everything seems OK now (but I rarely use the AI, so can’t speak for that).
Definitely digging the new features.
Weird thing that it was off and on like that :/. October was quite annoying with that, but I hope November will be back to normal.
Oh yeah, I pretty much only check the site on desktop, so can’t speak to how things went on my (iOS) phone.
