Reading and Listening Trainer 2.0

Hello everyone, Just a quick sort of heads-up post today. I have made a huge upgrade to my reading comprehension practice tool, which now has become Reading Comprehension Trainer – Platinum Supreme  Hell yeah! If you’re new here or you just don’t know what I’m talking about – I have a tool that lets you practice reading (and listening) comprehension. It creates a text for you at roughly your level about a topic you give it and it creates a bunch of comprehension questions for you to answer, so the whole thing is similar to the reading comprehension section in German language exams like Goethe or TestDaf. If you’re a member, you can pick between any level, A1 to C1, and you can also get an audio version if you want to practice listening instead. And you can add a timer to make it even more similar to an exam situation. It’s a really cool tool if you want to get used to the reading tasks of German test. And now, it’s much better. What I upgraded First of, I improved the look and feel quite a bit. It’s a full screen window now so not just randomly in the … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>

Small News, Big News, Random News

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of award winning series called Housekeeping That’s right! Another fast paced banger of an episode is waiting for us to fall asleep to after 2 minutes. Seriously though, it’s been a while that we’ve had one of these housekeeping episodes. Which really are more like “What’s new” episodes. I’ve actually silently rolled out a bunch of smaller and bigger changes over summer. So today, I want to go over them real quick and give them a proper introduction. Ready? Then let’s go!

German Midsommar (verrückt!!)

Hello everyone, and welcome to German Midsommar Crazyness. Have you seen this one horror movie from Ikea called Kallax? Where a deranged abomination stands next to people’s beds watching them sl… oh wait… that was the shelf. Sorry. The movie was called Midsommar and it’s some horror flick where a bunch of young people end up with a Swedish death cult sect for the Midsommar fest. I have not seen that movie (though I did see the shelf, unfortunately). But you know what… none of this matters, because today’s article has nothing to do with either of those. I just called it German Midsommar for clickbait. And instead of some cultural lore about Germany’s traditions you’re now stuck with… Some YourDailyGerman Housekeeping Oh god, so boring. Make it stop!!!! The thing is, I do have to do some housekeeping on the code side of YourDailyGerman this week. Lots of small things that kind of piled up and most of them you won’t even notice, but there’s also a new feature I am adding that I’d love to get your feedback on. And also, I have a few little questions that’ll help me make the site even better. “I don’t … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>

Prefix Verb Dictionary – It’s done

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of Geletor. Sounds like a superman villian. Or an ice cream maker. But what it really is, is it’s short German Learning Tool Reveal. Hooray. New tooooooys, let’s gooo! But seriously, today I am telling you about a new tool that is special in two ways: First of, it’s a really helpful tool that has been missing for a long time. And second of all… I made it :) I am talking about the Prefix Verb Dictionary I have been tinkering with this idea for years and originally, it was only meant as a reference for the prefix verb card game that I’m making. And it still is that, but over time, we’ll include more and more verbs until it is a pretty comprehensive resource for all German learners, regardless of whether they have the card game or not. Anyway, for a long time I didn’t have neither time nor resoruces to make this happen, but I have teamed up with Vítor, a programmer from Brasil and we ran Kickstarter this winter to gauge interest. And yeah… interest is definitely there :). So now we have the resources to really make it … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>

Huge Site-Update

Hello everyone, so originally, I wanted to share this only after our “Practice-January” but I’m kind of too excited to wait any longer, so here we go :). I have finally tackled and finished an upgrade that I have been wanting to do for a while: YDG Dictionary Examples 2.0 – More and better And it’s actually kind of a two part upgrade that tackles: a)    How the examples that I made are displayed, and b)    What happens for the entries where I don’t have hand made examples. And there’s actually a third little thing that you might have noticed already that has to do with what happens where there are no results. So… let’s take a look!

Help Me Build This – German Verb Game

Hello everyone, So this week is special in two ways – first of, I had my birthday on Monday. Unfortunately, at the age raffle, I drew a “Repeat the Year” card this time, so I didn’t get to be one year older. Too bad. Still 28-ish-ish. The other thing that makes this week special is an absolute first for me though, and something I’m quite excited and nervous about… are you ready… drumroll…

Next Level Dictionary – Add Your Own Notes

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of New Feature I know that some of you are now like  “Oh, another new feature that I’d love to try but that ends up not working for me.” And I get it! I really do. I’ve added quite a few features over the last year and many of them were buggy in the beginning. But it’s just hard to test this stuff for all platforms and browsers, so I kind of need your feedback to help me find and fix these little issues. The feature of today should work fine for most of you though… knock on wood, because some of you helped me beta test it. I’m not saying that it’s going to be flawless, but at least the basic functionality should be there :). So what is it? Well, it’s a feature for the YourDailyGerman dictionary that is quite unique, at least I haven’t seen it for other dictionaries. It’s the option to: Add Your Own Notes Now you might be like “Wait, I feel like I’m already using this.” But you probably mean the option to take your own notes for the articles. With the new feature, you … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>

How Useful is a Word – New Feature

Hello everyone, just a quick little site update today, because I activated a new feature: The usefulness of words I already mentioned it a while back – the idea is to show “usefulness” in the YourDailyGerman dictionary, so you have a rough sense of whether or not you should learn a word. What’s the dictionary, you ask? Well, you’ll get there by just using the site search here or you can find it in the menu. Anyway, it then took a while to actually enter all the data (I do that by hand, no scripts), but now I’m almost done with it (yes, I do it myself) and I have decided to activate the feature. So let’s take a quick look and I’ll explain my thoughts and answer some questions that you’ll probably have. And I’ll also give you a quick outlook of what’s next.

Nice Update and a Question

Hi everyone, I hope you’re having a great week so far and that your German is coming along nicely. I’m doing pretty good because I am in Oulu. That’s a town in Finland about 100 miles South of the arctic circle on the northern end of the Baltic sea and I came here because I absolutely needed some actual winter. Like… with snow and really cold temperatures. I love that. I really love seasons, actually and I want them to be extreme. -20 degrees Celsius in winter, +40 in summer. That’s my ideal :). Unfortunately, it is not as cold as I had hoped but it’s still great, because Oulu is a beautiful city with lots of nature and water, Finns are really great people and there’s like the perfect gym with a view of the sea really close to my home. Oh and actually, it’s the city where I realized that I’m actually good with languages (I used to think that it’s not my thing), and learning Finnish also helped a great deal to get an open mind for how different things can actually be. So yeah… I’m really happy to be here. But of course I also came … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>

Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of one of the most prolific series of this year: I have a New Feature Yes, again. And it’s a real game changer for all who ask me something in the comments and then wait for a reply. I also have prepared a little poll about a couple of things, but before we jump in, I need to tell you something. I am an influencer now!!  Yes, your boy has made it. Ah, what am I saying… that doesn’t sound “influencer” enough. I mean of course WE made it, guuuuuyyyys. Because it wouldn’t have been possible without all your support. My New Favorite Feature – Testers Wanted

Hi everyone, so as the title already says, I am looking for some people as beta testers, because yes… I have a new feature called: My New Favorite Feature Literally. Because you can now pick favorites in the dictionary. Most of you are probably familiar with my dictionary at this point. If you don’t know what I mean… that’s basically what you see when you use the search function of the site. There’s over 9.000 entries in there at this point and I am slowly building out the meaning, definitions, examples and family relations. The goal is actually to have my own vocabulary trainer, and the first step toward that is now finished, because you can now mark your own favorites. So you can create your own personalized vocabulary selection that you can quickly check and review any time. And that’s not all, actually… .

A New Feature and Updates

Hello everyone, so I am actually taking a few days of for a small Urlaub (vacation), so there’s no new article this week (I’ll still answer your comments and emails, though, so fire away). But I still do have something new for you today, because as you might have noticed, I am always working on the site – adding new features, changing designs, changing designs back and so on. I know that might be distracting sometimes, but I strive to make the site more user friendly and intuitive over time :). Lots to do still, but  in recent weeks I have finished a few things that have been on my list for a while. So today, I’ll give you a few Site Updates You might have seen some of the design changes already but there’s one feature that’s gets its world premier here, so to speak. So I want to walk you through the new things today and also do a few poll questions to get a better idea how you use my site and what you’d like to see.

I was on Joe Rogan!!

OMG everyone, it’s finally time :D! You have no idea how hard it was for me to keep this a secret and not tell you anything, not even a hint, but I made it and now I feel SOOO relieved that I can actually say it. I WAS ON JOE ROGAN!!! Many of you have probably heard about him, but for those who haven’t he – Joe Rogan is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, podcasts out there. And what few people know is that Joe Rogan actually speaks very good German, and one of the sources he used was… my blog!! So a few months back his team reached out to me and asked if I was interested in coming on and I said yes. In the three hours podcast we talked about life, global politics, German food and of course Joe’s struggles with the German cases. And there’s a segment in there, where we talk German for five minutes. So, without any further ado, let’s jump right in.

New Feature – Audio Recorder 2.0

Hello everyone, and welcome back to your favorite German learning website ever. And today, we’re in for another episode of I have a new feature Hooray :). We’ve already had quite a few of these episodes in 2021, but that was really only the start. I have a lot more ideas on how to make YourDailyGerman more useful for you. And today, I’m really happy to finally bring you… drumroll please… Audio Recorder 2.0 So last summer, I added an audio recorder to the site. There’s this little mic icon on side (or bottom, on mobile) and when you clicked it, an audio recorder would open up, where you could record yourself reading the examples and then compare it to how I say them. But that was really only a test run for what I REALLY had in mind…

The 2022 German Oracle (You won’t believe this…)

Hello everyone, and welcome to 2022, the best year for learning German, because it is NOW :)! And I also wish you an even more terrific year outside of the German learning portion. And because it never hurts to have some guidance, we’ll just ask the universe to give us some hints in the epic, absolutely magical and 87% accurate German oracle :) We’ve done this in the past few years also, and the oracle … erm… well, it totally failed to predict the whole ‘rona stuff. So the probability that it gets things right this year is INCREDIBLY high. I mean, you can’t fail multiple times in a row, right oracle? “Genau!” Here’s how it works:

New Feature: Taking your own notes

Hello everyone, it’s September, start of a new school year for many, and it’s the perfect time for a new episode of the epic series ANF – A New Feature™©®. We actually had quite a few this year already, with dark mode, the new website layout, the option to slow down examples, my growing dictionary, the voice recorder and the speech recognition AI. But the feature I have now might be the most useful of them all. Why? Well, my articles are usually a bit longer and there’s a lot of information in there. And it’s almost impossible to remember everything in one go. So it would be really great to note down some key points that you can come back to later to review them. Well… that’s exactly what you can do now, because from now on, you can take your own notes Yes, you read that right :)!

New Feature – “Slow Mo”

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another episode of the German is Easy  blockbuster series A New Feature. Yes, another one :). And this time, it has something to do with the audio examples I have. I’m using normal everyday speech for them, and even though I am a slow speaker overall, it can still be quite the challenge to follow them and really hear what I am saying. Ideal would be of course to have two versions, a slow one and a normal one, and more ideal even would be to have two different speakers. And laser-eyes-ideal would be to have two different speakers with two different speeds. But that’s definitely too much work. For now. However…

This is sooo 2020

And last week, after procrastinating this for literally a couple of years and running into tech issues, I have switched to a new upgraded version of the software I’m using. The Yourdailygerman Dictionary

Hello everyone, and welcome to the final surprise for our E-May-L-Special. Are you ready? Are you?! Well, then here it goes… this site now has its own Yourdailygerman Dictionary Some of you might remember this from last year’s Advent Calendar. Well, there you go… I actually finished a project I am teasing for once :). Unlike that book about non separable prefixes that I promised years ago. It’ll come though. I’ll finish it, so don’t you worry. Anyway, so this idea of a glossary has been in the back of my head for a long time. There are so many words hidden in the articles and my goal was always to make them more accessible. But for the glossary, I didn’t know how. And then, a little over a year ago, I found a really amazing person to help me with the programming part, me and my girlfriend could focus on entering all the dates… I… I mean data. And now it’s actually ready to be used as a beta version :) :) :)  Here’s what you can do: Look up any word we ever talked about.  And I mean ALL the words, not just the actual topics.  Get the … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>

Anymay, if you’ve been following me for a while, you might know that I am working on two projects about prefix verbs. A book about non separable prefixes and an app for separable ones. Well… this year, I added a third one. And that one is actually making real progress. I mean… not like the other ones are not making progress. They’re making tremendous progress. But yeah, this one might actually be the first to finish, because it’s not just me… it’s a collaboration with a friend. And it is… drum roll…

But you can still learn some German because I have made a new video together with Cari and Janusz from Easy German. The topic was “Arguing in German” but it ended up more like a debating contest.  Janusz just wouldn’t stop talking and we couldn’t talk at the same time because then they can’t make subtitles.  So… it looks like he is dominating me but I am actually holding back for the sake of the video :). Talking about Location – A rough Chart

Hi everyone, wie geht’s euch :)? Isn’t the summer amazing this year. Sounds like something German would do :) Anyways, I didn’t want to let you down completely so I decided to share a little chart or cheat sheet I created for talking about location. Winter is coming – and brings tough questions with it

Yeah, that title was totally click bait :) But for good reason because I have a little announcement and you’ll really like it. So… right now it’s fall (a very freaking super uber gray fall in Berlin) but advent season is coming and besides ginger bread and  Glühwein and shopping stress and family stress that also means: advent calendar. For those of you who don’t know what that is… the idea is essentially that you get to open a little present every day between the first and the 24th of December. A piece of chocolate, or a ginger bread or even just a nice small picture. It’s really a cool tradition so last year, we did that last year here on the blog too. Every day you’d get a … prefix verb. Uh… hooray… I guess. Here’s a link to the first episode, in case you want to check out the series… which is NOT in the archives ;). Christmas Surprise

Hello everyone, and welcome. It’s that time of the year again. Christmas. A time where people get together their German study material to catch up on some grammar, memorize vocabulary and redo some of these riveting fill in the gap excerci… okay, of course not :). The only remotely language related thing most people do on Christmas is trying to figure out what a Santa Clause is… get it? Get it? My pun? What surprise? I did not promise no surp.. oh wait, I did (quick brain, think of something) So … uh… I actually … uh.. have two surprises for you. The first one is a little handout I made years ago, which I have no idea how to title. It’s about these pairs of words in German that you can use to express the same stuff but that have totally different functions. A really good example is “obwohl – trotzdem” but there are more and the most important ones are on this flashy sheet :). It doesn’t give much … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>

You guys ask a lot of questions and many of them are really interesting. But so far, they have been kind of buried in the comment section. And I don’t have a search function on the page…. because… in your face. But seriously, I figured it would be a pity to just have all those cool questions sit there at random places and so I decided to just collect the ones that are not related to the topic of a certain post, give them a headlines and make a nice bundle for all of you to read … or ignore :). German Sucks – A Rant

Hello everyone, German sucks. No one likes it. Not even Paddington Bear, and he likes everyone and everything. First of, it has cases. Detectives have cases, lawyers have cases. But languages? Bruh, come on! Also, German has part of the verb at the end. What’s that supposed to be? Do the parts of the verb have like a long distance relationship? Or they poly? Do they like facetime or something or what’s going on there. Come on German, we have brain-rot! How are we supposed to remember what the verb was. Our attention span is not long enough for this. Those little words that are lying around all over the place, like ein or an or auf or rauf or drauf or herauf or hinauf. Like…  BRO, stop! And then you’re … <a href="https://yourdailygerman.com/dictionary-notes-feature/">Dive in <span class="meta-nav">→</span></a>
