“Rug Poll!”
Hi ihr lieben,
and welcome to day number three of the 2022 Advent Calendar.
So after kick-starting everything with a quiz that was way too hard yesterday, lots of you are left wondering… what even is my level of German.
But in case that’s you… do NOT take that quiz as any indication of where you’re at with learning. It was a bunch of riddles, that involve German. Not a language skill assessment :).
But anyway, so after this heavy jump-start yesterday, we’ll take today to settle in a little and actually get to know a bit about us as a group.
Because behind today’s door are
A few poll questions
Well, okay… it’s a very very very vague “getting to know”, but still.
I think it’s nice to have some little glimpse into who you’re sharing the learning journey with. It’s a mix of “normal” questions, some boring questions, some fun questions
and some HIGHLY POLITICAL QUESTIONS!
So get your “outrage” on, head to the comments and tell those other people that they have NO clue what they’re talking about!
Guuuuaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Nah, kidding :).
No political questions. But definitely some deep questions.
Oh and I have a couple of questions in there that are directly related to the site so I know what to do and where to focus.
These polls are completely anonymous.
That means, even if you are logged into your account, I can NOT see what you answered or even if you answered.
So you’re free to be absolutely honest :).
I hope you enjoy this as much as I do when I check the results.
And now.. let’s jump right in.
Oh, and I’ll vote as well, so the first person to come will know my choices ;)

Thanks a lot for taking the time!!
Have a great day, and bis morgen :)

Loved the poll!! I was surprised by the age demographics as a member of gen Z, I’ll have to share the blog with my peers!
I think there’s a bit more young people reading than the poll suggests, but yes, the average is a bit higher. I think it’s partially because reading these somewhat long posts isn’t all that appealing to many young people who are used to TikToks and Instagram stories.
But yeah, please share :). Vielen Dank!
It is only your humor that makes me able to get through them! I am actively working on the urge for instant gratification, language learning certainly helps!
Oh I can relate.
My goal has always been that people who read this get somewhat “calm” when they come here. They slow down.
That’s why I didn’t even put in sub-headers for a while, because I didn’t want people to skim read (I have changed that now, and I have added them to older articles).
But yeah… it’s really hard to switch from being busy on the phone to sitting for 10-15 minutes and absorbing dense material :).
Even when I watch youtube nowadays, after 3 minutes comes a point where I am bored.
People think humanity is going downhill—As a woman who can vote, drink, work, drive, visit a dentist, have running water come out of the tap, etc. life has never been better. When was it better?
This was a question about humanity, not about our 1st world
bubble. Those of us who took part in the poll who are from the first world bubble can only answer from within the it, because we can’t really tell how life is changing in, say, Pakistan, aside what we see online, be it in the news or on social media.
And I have plenty of friends who would have chosen “downhill” because of things happening inside the first world bubble.
If you voted fo “going downhill”, then I’d be curious as to what would make you pick that.
I was surprised by how many people selected that option, particularly considering that the majority here is Gen X or older. I thought this doom and gloom is mostly a millennial thing.
I was really really surprised by the result of that poll.
And sad. This way of looking at the world is not going to help us improve it.
So these people who found yesterday’s quiz hard should take into consideration that it’s a two by two:
flüssig / Anfänger
vs.
gut gemacht / gescheitert
Many of them fall in the flüssig / gescheitert group.
I was more in the Anfänger / gut gemacht
It did require a bit of knowledge of German, but it was more a test of some logical thought and deductive reasoning.
More importantly, it was an incredibly brilliant quiz and congratulations to Emanuel for how inventive the questions were–and thank you!
Love Advent, because of Emanuel!!
Too much praise man :). But you’re totally right, the quiz was no measure of language skill at all. If it’s a measure of anything, then “How similar can my way of thinking be to Emanuel’s way of thinking.”
Das macht Spass!
For some reason, ‘I’ve’ is never used in that construction, have + to___. However, if you put got in there, I’ve got to work a lot, that seems to be permitted.
Ich komme einfach gerne auf diese Seite. Wie Elsa sagte, es ist eine nette Umarmung, hierher zu kommen.
Yeah, I’m not sure if there’s a grammatical reason behind it, but this seems to be the case.
Agreed. You can only contract have when it’s an auxiliary verb, not when it’s the main verb.
So “I’ve a car.” would also be wrong, right?
Yes
It could be okay—especially in British English, I think. Still, we Americans might say, “I’ve a car around the corner…” That could be older/out of style now, but I don’t think it’s completely unheard of.

Ha, the little intricacies of English :)!
“I’m doing pretty good overall.” I would suggest using ‘pretty well’ instead of ‘pretty good’
We needed another choice for “Where is humanity headed?”. It could be ” History repeating itself and if the planet kills us, some will survive as now we know there was some kind of civilization during the last Ice Age. (Watch Ancient Apocalypse)”
Oh, I too think that some of us will survive unless it’s really the ENTIRE planet that gets destroyed, like with a 100 cold period.
Agree 100%
Thank you for this calendar! I am enjoying it. Also, “well” would be the better adjective for: “I’m doing pretty good overall.”
I thought that would sound like “Doing well” in a financial sense. But I’m no native, so that might be just the content on Youtube that I watch.
‘Doing well’ meaning finances is contextual. The difference between good and well in your question is register. You’re a casual guy and set an uber casual tone, so ‘good’ fits in just fine.
It’s a common gripe that a lot of native speakers (especially English teachers) have. You may have heard the phrase “Superman does good. You’re doing well.”. In actuality it’s needless pedantry and both are fine in the context of “doing okay“.
I’ve not heard that phrase, but it’s pretty “effective” actually. Like, you immediately understand what it’s about.
Yes, “doing good” means going good things. “Good” is an adjective that modifies a noun.
“Well” is an adverb that modifies a verb like “doing”.
American grammar is a dying breed—it’s not doing well!!

I needed a “none of the above” for the features I am using… Think I should use this site more!
I added that option now.
In general, I think I do a really poor job of explaining/introducing these options. The buttons are there, but I only ever talk about features when I announce them.
Maybe I should do a “take a tour” post.
If you did a tour of the site’s features, I would definitely hop on the bus!
Yeah, I think I need to do that! It’s shocking to me how many people don’t know about it, but it’s all my responsibility.
Me too!
Despite being the first to comment, I see that many other people have already voted!
The question I found the most interesting:
If you could snap your finger and you’d speak perfect German, but the price is that you then don’t like German.. would you do it?
My answer was no, BTW, I only manage to learn stuff I enjoy!
Your website IS A VIRTUAL HUG in itself, it’s hlped me on many a gray day!
Bis morgen!
Hello,
Lil’ typo (way to hard) (way too hard)
So I’m the first here :)
Wie interessant Emanuel. Wirst du die Ergbnissee teilen?
I didn’t really think about it. But you can just come back and check them, if you’re curious. That’s what I’ll do :)
