Hello everyone,

And welcome to the last day of this year’s Advent Calendar, day 24.
And behind today’s door is … drumroll…. a big big Danke, dass ihr alle dabei wart!
Thank you for being a part of this.

Thanks for all your comments and thoughts and for not escalating and barking at each other even though we had some topics where we all have really split opinions.
That’s awesome, and so next year, we’ll up the ante in the calendar, and we will discuss it all: vaccines, the first year of the Trump presidency, capitalism, other world politics and pineapple on pizza, yes or no.

Seriously though, language learning communities really are some of the best and most helpful and least toxic communities I know and it’s because YOU are that way.
Stay that way and stay hungry for learning.

I really hope you had fun with this calendar and that you had a not too stressful December. And I wish you a wonderful Christmas. And if you don’t celebrate, then I wish you a wonderful rest of the year. And if your year doesn’t end yet, I wish you a wonderful just another work week :).

And oooooh… we’re actually breaking tradition today.

Because usually, the last day was really just me wishing you all a merry Christmas. But this year, the perfect ending is actually the poem we all made together.

I copied all the comments you left on the post in order. I cleaned up mistakes, and made some minor changes here and there, but it’s 90% all yours, so enjoy!
And I have also asked ChatGPT to analyze it, and clearly, it’s quite some deep shit.
“OMG, Emanuel, way to ruin the vibe with this word.”
Oh… well… yeah… I guess. Sorry. But yeah, it’s deep stuff.
So here you go:

Das Einhorn
By You All

in Gedichten ja.

Rundherum steht die Natur still,
Bewundernd ob seiner Vornehmheit.

In tiefster Nacht, kein Mondenschein

And here’s ChatGPT, the renowned poetry expert, analyzing our poem:

***

The poem reflects themes of loneliness, transformation, and unexpected companionship. The unicorn begins as an emblem of mystical isolation, standing alone in the snow and longing for connection. Its horn, a symbol of its unique identity, is stolen by a playful squirrel, transforming it into something ordinary (a pony) yet more approachable. This act of theft, paradoxically, becomes liberating, allowing the unicorn to engage with the world without the burden of its mystique. The arrival of a maternal figure (the Schwiegermutter) with offerings of food and warmth symbolizes a shift: even in loneliness, unexpected gestures can break through isolation and bring joy, albeit imperfectly.

The humor interwoven with melancholy (e.g., the tight-fitting Stollen, the George Michael reference) underscores the absurdity and beauty of existence. Ultimately, the poem suggests that while loneliness is profound, it can be alleviated by moments of connection, even if they come from unlikely sources.
