Mir geht's ziemlich gut, denn ich mache gerade einen Kurz-Urlaub im Harz und das Wetter ist super. Viel zu warm für Ende Oktober, aber ja... die Sonne ist schön. |
Der Harz ist ein deutsches Mittelgebirge und bis vor ein paar Jahren war er berühmt für seine dichten Fichtenwälder.

I'm doing pretty well, because I am on a short trip in the Harz and the weather is amazing.
Way too warm for the end of October but yeah... the sun is nice.
The Harz is a German low mountain range and until a few years ago, it was famous for its dense spruce forests.

Aber jetzt sieht er ein bisschen so aus wie Tunguska. Die Fichten sind zu 70% tot.
Und der Grund dafür ist der Borkenkäfer.
Der ist eigentlich ein normaler Waldbewohner, aber im Jahr 2018 war es viel zu warm und zu trocken und das Ökosystem ist aus der Balance geraten. Die Käferpopulation ist exploriert, und macht seitdem den Wald kaputt.

But now it looks a little bit like in Tunguska. 70% of the Spruces are dead. And the reason for the is the bark beetle. It is usually a normal inhabitant of the forest, but in the year 2018 it was way too warm and way too dry and the ecosystem fell out of ballance. The bug population exploded and they've been destoying the forest ever since.

In nur vier Jahren hat sich die Landschaft hier (about 20x30 miles) KOMPLETT verändert, und es sieht aktuell ein bisschen deprimierend aus. Aber ein großer Faktor war, dass die Fichten in Monokultur standen. Sie wachsen schnell und man hat billiges Holz. Aber Monokultur ist selten eine gute Idee.
Jetzt wird mit Mischwald aufgeforstet, und der ist viel widerstandsfähiger, und meiner Meinung nach auch schöner.

In only four years, the landscape here has completely changed and at the moment it looks a little depressing.
But a big factor was the fact that the Spruces were standing in mono-culture. They grow fast and people had cheap wood. But mono-culture is rarely a good idea.
Now, they're afforesting the area with mixed forest, which is much more resilient and in my opinion also more beautiful.

Aber es ist auch jetzt eine interessante Region und man kann sehen, wie schnell die Natur sich ändern kann. Altes geht, neues kommt.
Wenn ihr in Deutschland lebt, dann ist der Harz auf jeden Fall eine Reise wert. Nicht unbedingt schön, aber ziemlich einzigartig.

But also now it's an interesting region, because you can see how fast the nature can change. Old things go, new things come.
If you live in Germany, the Harz is definitely worth a journey. Not exactly pretty, but pretty unique.

Aber genug davon.
